Blood is Thicker than Water – a Talking Points Lesson Plan for English Reading & Speaking

This is part of the Talking Points lesson series for Intermediate to Advanced students.

We can choose our friends – but not our family.

This lesson plan is about family and the trouble they can make for us.

The lesson has been designed to enable students to talk about other peoples’ family issues – which then leads to a discussion where they may feel more comfortable talking about their own family.

If you create a good setting, this can be a very revealing lesson in your class!

In some cultures of the world, family is all important so I will leave it to your discretion how you move forward with this lesson plan. A little sensitivity goes a long way.

But this lesson plan should be very successful in your English or ESL class. Also great for IELTS. It is very highly engaging and should definitely create much debate in the classroom.

The lesson comes complete with:

• a 500-word article

• a table of essential vocabulary

• a big list of questions for discussion

Start the class with the three opening questions and then do the reading. Then you can go through all the vocabulary – or set it as homework for the students to do later.

Then there is a big list of questions that are designed to get your students talking.

It comes in easy to use PDF format, ideal for printing for your needs. Use it again and again for your English/ESL classes.
