Cultural Pollution – a Talking Points Lesson Plan for English Reading & Speaking

This is part of the Talking Points lesson series.

Cultural Pollution is the idea that the low-end culture from one country ‘invades’ the culture of another country. It often means the fast-food industry and the chains of food outlets such as McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, etc.

It doesn’t only mean fast-food though. It could also mean the chains of coffee shops – Starbucks, Costa Coffee – and the ice-cream stores too.

For many countries in Asia and in other countries, English students are probably aware of these American brands that have infiltrated their homeland. They may like these food outlets and probably go there with their friends and family.

But in the lesson, questions are raised about the idea of a fast-food culture becoming the norm in a country that may not have had any fast-food twenty years ago.

This is a great lesson for talking about culture and a country’s heritage. It is perfect for you to use in your English/ESL class – or in an IELTS speaking class.

The lesson comes complete with:

• a 500-word article

• a table of essential vocabulary

• a big list of questions for discussion

Start the class with the three opening questions and then do the reading. Then you can go through all the vocabulary – or set it as homework for the students to do later.

Then there is a big list of questions that are designed to get your students talking.

It comes in easy to use PDF format, ideal for printing for your needs. Use it again and again for your English/ESL classes.
