Modern News – a Talking Points Lesson Plan for English Reading & Speaking

This is part of the Talking Points lesson series for Intermediate to Advanced students.

We live in a time of 24-hour information. We are bombarded by the news every second of every day.

Is it all true? Can we trust everything we hear or read? Or is it designed to make us feel afraid?

The news – what do your students think about it? Do they believe it? Or do they think it is all ‘fake news’?

Some may argue that the news in their country is reliable and can be trusted – while others may see it as all nonsense and not to be believed at all.

However your students feel about the news in their country, this lesson plan is guaranteed to help them speak out loud and express themselves in English. This topic is highly engaging and can definitely create much debate and discussion in your English or ESL class.

The lesson comes complete with:

• a 500-word article

• a table of essential vocabulary

• a big list of questions for discussion

Start the class with the three opening questions and then do the reading. Then you can go through all the vocabulary – or set it as homework for the students to do later.

Then there is a big list of questions that are designed to get your students talking.

It comes in easy to use PDF format, ideal for printing for your needs. Use it again and again for your English/ESL classes.
